I don’t want to post it in its entirety until I speak more intelligently about it, and it’s difficult to write about the Grenadian Revolution. For lots of reasons, naturally, but primarily because I’ll probably get something wrong and I don’t want to offend anyone. It was relatively recent (1984) so it’s still a difficult subject for those who lived through it. For example? Many school children were killed and their parents don’t even know where they’re buried. Also, many of the leaders of the Revolution, those who survived, are either in jail right now, or have been recently released. Some of them were pardoned last year, which precisely as controversial as it sounds.

Last year The New York Times published a piece about Grenada. It was mindblowingly inaccurate, superficial and full of offensive stereotypes. Click through to the article and just look at the photo they chose to use. I wrote a brief blog post about it at the time. My first draft was over 6,000 words. While attempting to fact-check it, I realized I was in way over my head, so I cut it way down and published a much shorter, much simpler version.

I very much intend to someday finish what I started. But the experience of trying to write it, and also talking to Grenadians about it, made me realize that what I was trying to do was not appropriate. Not yet. Not unless and until I’ve done a huge amount of research. Sadly, this all happened right before I moved back to the United States in March, so I really just ran out of time to interview people.

I regret that, sure. But the upside is that I have a legitimate excuse to go back to Grenada. Research, man. Re. Search.
